Giving Is a Win-Win Situation

Judy Kaufman

Judy Kaufman celebrates her 107th birthday and 14 years at Los Angeles Jewish Health

At 107 years old, Judy Kaufman still enjoys games of bingo at Los Angeles Jewish Health. She wins a lot! She also walks so fast with her walker every day, the nurse can hardly keep up with her. Judy's appetite has also not flagged in the 14 years she has lived at the home, usually requesting a grilled Swiss cheese sandwich and fries from her son Larry, 75, and daughter-in-law Linda, 70, when they lunch together every Saturday.

"She's in better health than we are," Larry says with a laugh.

Larry feels very positive about Judy's experiences at LAJH, as well as the experiences of Judy's two sisters, who also lived there for many years. In particular, Larry appreciates the staff's genuine kindness toward the residents.

"I've never met anyone there I don't like," he asserts. "They're so caring—just good people."

It's clear to Larry that managing a place like LAJH can be quite expensive.

"Medical care is constantly rising, but the staff continues to take excellent care of everybody," he says.

Larry wanted to help. When he learned there was a way he could make a gift that pays him back, he was immediately interested.

"It turns out charitable gift annuities are a real win-win situation," he explains. "I get a nice charitable deduction and monthly income and LAJH gets the money it needs."

Larry and Linda were so pleased with their first CGA that they ended up making five more gifts to LAJH.

"We don't have children, so there's no reason to amass a great estate in that regard," Linda says. "But it feels good that we're doing something for people."

Larry adds, "We just like LAJH that much."
